Background

The New York Times was founded on September 18, 1851, as the New-York Daily Times by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones. Adolph Ochs purchased the struggling paper in 1896 and established the Sulzberger family's editorial stewardship, which continues today under A.G. Sulzberger, the fifth generation of family leadership. Over its history the paper has won more than 130 Pulitzer Prizes and has been a central figure in landmark press-freedom cases, most notably its 1971 publication of the Pentagon Papers, which the Supreme Court allowed to continue over the Nixon administration's objections. The Times expanded into digital publishing in the 1990s and 2000s, and after a prolonged decline in print advertising revenue it shifted to a subscription-first business model. It has broadened its subscriber base through acquisitions such as The Athletic (sports journalism, 2022) and the viral word game Wordle (2022). Media bias trackers consistently rate its news coverage as leaning slightly left of center, with its opinion section rated further left. During Trump's second term (since January 2025), the Times has maintained a broadly critical editorial posture toward the administration, and in July 2026 it was contesting DOJ subpoenas that sought to force reporters to testify before a grand jury about confidential sources — a conflict the paper characterized as retaliation for its coverage.
