Background
NewsNation launched on September 1, 2020, as a primetime news block on WGN America, a cable channel Nexstar had acquired from Tribune Media in 2019. Nexstar rebranded the entire channel as NewsNation on March 1, 2021, positioning it as a fact-based, nonpartisan counterweight to opinion-heavy cable news. The launch was immediately troubled: several staff members resigned in early 2021 over allegations that management — with reported influence from former Fox News executive Bill Shine — was steering coverage in a conservative direction; news vice president Jennifer Lyons was among those who departed. For its first few years, third-party raters such as AllSides placed NewsNation near the center of the political spectrum, while Media Bias/Fact Check rated it right-center with high factual reliability. Beginning in late 2025, the network hired a series of Fox News veterans, including commentator Katie Pavlich, and moved them into high-profile evening slots. Current and former employees told Status and Slate that the editorial direction shifted clearly rightward around this time, with some linking the change to Nexstar's need to secure FCC blessing — under the Trump administration — for its pending $6.2 billion Tegna acquisition. Despite the ideological pivot, total-day viewership remained essentially flat in early 2026, and internal criticism mounted that the network's founding centrist identity had been traded away for regulatory goodwill.
