Background

The organization traces its roots to 1965, when the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and National Weather Service joined forces in Boise, Idaho, to eliminate duplication and improve national fire coordination under the name Boise Interagency Fire Center (BIFC). Through the 1970s, the National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joined the partnership. In 1993 the center was renamed the National Interagency Fire Center to reflect its expanded national scope, and the NICC was formalized as its operational coordination hub. The NICC produces the daily Incident Management Situation Report during fire season, fire-weather outlooks, and resource-tracking data that government agencies, media, and the public rely on. There is no editorial board, and the center does not endorse policy positions. Under the Trump administration's second term, a June 2025 executive order directed consolidation of Interior Department wildland fire programs into a new U.S. Wildland Fire Service, which began absorbing BLM, NPS, FWS, and BIA firefighting personnel in early 2026; NIFC/NICC continues to serve as the national coordination hub under this reorganization. The center has no record of editorial controversy; its role is data and logistics, not journalism.
