Background

Nippon Electric Glass was established in 1944 as a subsidiary of NEC Corporation (Nippon Electric Company) to produce glass components for electronics, then separated from NEC in 1949 to become an independent company. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, NEG expanded into glass tubing and cathode ray tube (CRT) glass, growing alongside Japan's postwar electronics and television boom. The company later pivoted toward flat panel display glass, capturing roughly 20% of the global LCD glass market. Headquartered in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, it employs operations across Asia, Europe, and the United States. In 2016–2017, NEG substantially expanded its global manufacturing footprint by acquiring PPG Industries' fiberglass operations in Europe and the United States, including a major factory in Shelby, North Carolina. By 2026, its market capitalization stood at approximately $2.95 billion. The investor relations section of NEG's website is a standard corporate IR portal publishing financial results, integrated annual reports, and regulatory disclosures — it does not produce editorial journalism and has no political orientation.
