Background

North State Journal was founded in 2015–2016 by Neal Robbins, a former official at the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He has credited then-DENR Secretary John Skvarla as an inspiration. It launched as a print-first weekly aimed at being North Carolina's only statewide newspaper. It was published by North State Media, LLC, with a newsroom of about 16 journalists and 10 business-side staff at launch. The paper later grew a daily digital presence, and in 2023 its parent group bought a printing facility in Charlotte. Its leadership has included editor-in-chief Matt Mercer, who joined in 2020 and left in 2024 to become communications director for the North Carolina Republican Party. Cory Lavalette became senior editor in 2024, and Trip Hoffend has been named as publisher. The outlet describes itself as seeking common ground and truth, but its staff links to Republican politics, its opinion section and its story selection place it on the center-right to right. It also sometimes reports on conservative groups, such as the NCInnovation dispute involving a right-leaning think tank. I found no public evidence of a major controversy over its ownership or funding.
