Background

Ted Budd was first elected to the U.S. House in 2016, representing North Carolina's 13th congressional district, and served three terms as a member of the House Freedom Caucus, one of Congress's most conservative blocs. In the 2022 Republican Senate primary, he defeated former Governor Pat McCrory after receiving a high-profile endorsement from Donald Trump. He went on to win the general election against Democrat Cheri Beasley and took office in January 2023.
