Open
Italian online news, center to center-left
Background
Open launched in December 2018 in Milan. Enrico Mentana, a well-known Italian TV news anchor, founded it with a stated aim of giving younger journalists a place to work. It is organized as a for-profit-limited social enterprise (impresa sociale) rather than a conventional publisher. Early funding came from Mentana and from Fondazione Cariplo, and it relies on ads and donations. From 2021 it earned income from Meta's third-party fact-checking program, and it runs a fact-checking section. Media Bias/Fact Check and similar raters treat it as a mainstream, generally reliable outlet. Critics have raised questions about the Facebook fact-checking relationship, including one 2026 article from the Italian left-wing site Contropiano. As an Italian outlet, its U.S. coverage is mostly wire-style and news-driven, so no strong pro- or anti-administration line is evident. I did not review a sample of its recent Trump coverage, so that stance is a general judgment. The name 'Open' is ambiguous, and I assumed this Italian outlet. If you meant a different one, this profile does not apply.
