Background

The agency was launched on March 1, 1973, under President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., during the martial law period, as a government teletype newswire. It took over the national wire function from the Philippine News Service, a private cooperative of newspaper publishers set up in 1950. It became a web-based newswire in 2003 and now publishes in English, Filipino and regional languages. Because it is a state agency, its editorial line follows the sitting administration and it carries large amounts of official statements, press releases and agency activities. It also covers local development and regional news that commercial outlets often skip, and many Philippine outlets republish its wire copy. It has no strong record of independent investigative or adversarial reporting on the government. Its coverage of foreign leaders, including U.S. President Trump, tends to be reported in a straightforward way and framed around Philippine government priorities, such as the Mutual Defense Treaty anniversary and the Philippines' role as 2026 ASEAN chair.
