Background
PhillyVoice launched in late 2014 as a digital-native startup targeting Philadelphia and the surrounding region. It was founded by Lexie Norcross with backing connected to her father George Norcross III, a powerful Democratic operative and insurance executive who had previously held a co-ownership stake in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com before selling his shares around 2012–2013. The site was staffed heavily with veterans from Philly.com, positioning itself as a more agile, digital-first alternative to legacy Philadelphia media. It operates under the corporate entity WWB Holdings, LLC and is funded primarily through digital advertising. Media bias analysts, including Media Bias/Fact Check, rate it as left-center in editorial orientation with generally high factual reliability. Its opinion and political coverage has tended to favor liberal viewpoints and has been critical of Republican figures, including Donald Trump across both his terms. George Norcross, whose family backing underpins the outlet, was indicted on racketeering charges in June 2024 related to Camden waterfront development; those charges were dismissed by a trial court in early 2025, though prosecutors subsequently appealed the dismissal.
