Background
The Rant began in 2008 as a hobby radio show on WDCC at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, co-hosted by Billy Liggett and Gordon Anderson while both worked at the local newspaper, The Sanford Herald. The show was taken off the air in 2013. In January 2014, Liggett and Anderson relaunched it as a local news blog. In 2017 they formalized the operation by forming LPH Media LLC to run The Rant on a for-profit basis. A free monthly print edition, The Rant Monthly, launched in April 2019 and has published continuously since. In 2021, LPH Media joined the North Carolina Press Association as an associate member, marking a step toward recognition as a legitimate local press outlet. Liggett is a former newspaper editor who moved into higher education in 2011; Anderson is a former reporter who also worked as a freelance writer and political campaign consultant. The outlet has no documented ideological orientation and positions itself as a source of local news and commentary for the Sanford area.
