The Reload
U.S. center-right (gun-rights-sympathetic, independent)
Background
The Reload was founded by Stephen Gutowski, a reporter who previously worked at the Washington Free Beacon and the Washington Times and covered guns and politics. It began as a newsletter and grew into a standalone site with a podcast, a free tier and paid member content. It bills itself as 'sober, serious firearms reporting and analysis', which is a self-description and should not be taken at face value. In practice, it focuses on gun law, litigation, regulation and the politics around them. Gutowski is generally seen as sympathetic to Second Amendment rights, but the outlet emphasizes straight news reporting and legal explanation over advocacy. It also reports critically on gun-rights groups and on Republican politicians when the facts call for it. Its recent coverage includes Trump's February 2025 executive order directing a review of federal gun rules, DOJ work on restoring gun rights, ATF guidance on silencers and short-barrel shotguns after court rulings, and the legal fight over National Firearms Act changes. It has noted when the administration was silent on guns, as in Trump's first congressional speech of his second term. I did not find major documented controversies or ownership changes, but my sourcing on its funding and staff was limited.
