Rio Times Online
Brazil right-center
Background
The Rio Times was founded in 2009 by American journalist Stone Korshak as one of the first English-language online newspapers dedicated to Brazilian news, initially targeting the expatriate community in Brazil. It grew into one of the largest English-language outlets in Latin America. In March 2019, Swiss-born entrepreneur Matthias Camenzind acquired the publication, expanding its digital reach significantly — the audience reportedly grew roughly fifteenfold between 2019 and 2025, with readers now concentrated in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and other countries outside Brazil. Media watchdogs, including Media Bias/Fact Check and Ground News, rate the outlet as right-center to lean-right, pointing to consistently favorable framing of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, skepticism toward Brazil's judiciary, and opinion content that emphasizes anti-establishment and conservative themes without regular counterpoints. The outlet has been noted for limited transparency about its ownership structure. Its factual reporting is generally rated as mostly accurate, though selective framing in opinion and analysis pieces has drawn criticism. It is funded through a combination of advertising and subscription revenue, with no known state or institutional backing.
