Background
Runtime Wire launched in May 2025 as an experiment in largely autonomous journalism. Its founder, Ryan Merket, came from technology roles at Microsoft for Startups (as CTO), Reddit, and Amazon Web Services, and separately runs Comal Ventures, an angel investment firm with more than 70 bets in AI, space, and biotech. The outlet's newsroom is a proprietary AI pipeline that scans tens of thousands of potential stories daily and publishes roughly 2 to 3 percent of them; Merket sets editorial standards and reviews coverage but does not write stories himself. Operating costs run about $100 a day. Within months of launch the site had published more than 1,600 articles and recorded roughly 205,000 pageviews. It gained wider media attention when it scooped Wired magazine on revelations OpenAI employees made at the Black Hat security conference about the 2023 Hugging Face hack. The outlet plans to generate revenue through B2B advertising — sponsored placements inside developer tools and a jobs board — while keeping reader access free. No outside institutional investors or backers have been publicly reported as of mid-2026.
