Background
The Sanford Herald traces its origins to The Sanford Journal, founded in 1926, before reorganizing under the Herald nameplate in 1930, founded by W.E. Horner Sr. The Horner family operated the paper for roughly eight decades, with Bill Horner III serving as publisher from 1998 until 2016. Paxton Media Group, a Paducah, Kentucky-based private chain led by CEO David M. Paxton, acquired the paper and now operates it alongside several other North Carolina titles including The Daily Dispatch and The Enquirer-Journal. The paper historically served as the main news source for Lee County and the Sanford area, covering local government, courts, education, and business. In January 2024 the paper reduced its print publication schedule from five days to three days per week, reflecting broader industry pressures on small regional dailies.
