Background

SCOTUSblog was founded on October 1, 2002, by Washington, D.C. appellate attorney Tom Goldstein and lawyer Amy Howe, originally to promote their Supreme Court litigation firm Goldstein & Howe. The blog grew quickly into the definitive online resource for tracking cert petitions, summarizing briefs, and live-blogging decisions, attracting legal professionals and general readers alike. In 2011, Bloomberg Law became an exclusive sponsor, financially separating the blog from the law firm and allowing it to operate with greater independence. In 2013, it became the first blog ever to receive a Peabody Award for excellence in electronic media. In early 2025, co-founder Tom Goldstein was indicted on 22 federal counts of tax evasion and mortgage fraud — he was subsequently convicted on multiple counts — which contributed to the decision to sell the site. In April 2025, Dispatch Media, Inc. acquired SCOTUSblog, bringing Amy Howe on as staff and installing Sarah Isgur — a former Republican operative who served as spokesperson for Attorney General Jeff Sessions and is a senior editor at The Dispatch — as editor. Critics, including legal scholars writing in outlets such as Legal Planet, have noted a post-acquisition shift toward more deferential, less analytical coverage of the Court, while The Dispatch and SCOTUSblog have pledged to maintain accurate, publicly accessible reporting.
