Owned byCharter Communications, which bought Time Warner Cable (the original owner of the channels) in May 2016. Charter finished acquiring Cox Communications on August 20, 2026. The combined company will carry the Cox name at the corporate level, and Spectrum will remain the consumer brand.

Background

The channels began with NY1, which Time Warner Cable launched in New York City on September 8, 1992 as a 24-hour local news channel. Time Warner Cable later added similar regional channels, such as News 14 Carolina, and grouped them as Time Warner Cable News. Charter Communications bought Time Warner Cable in 2016, and in September 2016 it announced that the channels would be rebranded as Spectrum News. NY1 kept its own name on air. Today the group includes many regional channels, such as Spectrum News 1 in North Carolina, Texas, Buffalo, Central New York and the Capital Region. Charter completed its $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications on August 20, 2026, and has said that Spectrum News will expand into Cox markets. Because the channels are owned by a cable company and sold as part of cable packages, their content is mostly local government, weather, traffic and politics. National opinion programming is limited. I did not review the outlet's coverage of the current administration in depth, and I did not read a media-bias rating, so the 'mostly neutral' tag is a cautious judgment from the outlet's format and ownership rather than a measured finding.
