Background

NY1 was founded by Time Warner Cable and launched on September 8, 1992. Richard Aurelio, then head of Time Warner Cable's New York City operation, conceived it as a news channel devoted only to the city. It built a reputation for neighborhood-level coverage, traffic and weather updates, and political shows such as 'Inside City Hall'. Charter Communications bought Time Warner Cable in May 2016, and the channel took on the Spectrum News branding that year. In March 2017, Charter announced a restructuring that cut reporters and cancelled shows, and Aurelio criticized the move publicly. In 2025, Charter and Altice (Optimum, which owns News 12) ended a reciprocal deal under which each carried the other's news channel at no charge, so Optimum customers lost NY1 around June 30. Its recent coverage of the Trump administration includes presidential visits to New York, the prosecution of James Comey, federal policy affecting the state, and the 2026 governor's race, where it hosted the Hochul–Blakeman debate. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'least biased' with high factual reporting, citing balanced sourcing and frequent use of Associated Press copy. That is a third-party judgment, not a settled one. Its perspective is generally that of a conventional local news outlet focused on city government and public services.
