StratNews Global was founded in January 2020 by Nitin A. Gokhale, a journalist with more than four decades of experience in Indian security and military reporting. Gokhale began his career in 1983 reporting on insurgencies in India's Northeast, later covered the 1999 Kargil War and Sri Lanka's Eelam War IV (2006–2009), and served for nine years as Security and Strategic Affairs Editor at NDTV. He left broadcast television to build his own digital properties, first launching BharatShakti.in in November 2015 — a platform explicitly dedicated to supporting India's defense self-reliance — then registering BharatShakti Communications LLP in December 2017, and finally launching StratNews Global in 2020 as a broader strategic affairs portal. The outlet is closely embedded in India's defense establishment: Gokhale teaches as visiting faculty at the National Defence College, the Defence Services Staff College, the three war colleges, and the Intelligence Bureau's training school. StratNews Global has no known state funding or major corporate sponsor and appears to sustain itself through digital advertising and reader support. It views geopolitics almost exclusively through the prism of Indian national security interests. When Trump's second-term tariffs on India reached 50 percent in mid-2025 and bilateral relations deteriorated sharply, the outlet's coverage became more skeptical of U.S. trade policy while still framing the India-U.S. strategic relationship as salvageable.
