Türkiye Today
Turkish state-aligned, pro-Erdoğan government
Background
Türkiye Today launched in June 2024 as the English-language flagship of Ihlas Media Group, designed to present news about Turkey to an international audience. Its parent, Ihlas Media Holding, has been a major force in Turkish media for decades, operating the Türkiye daily newspaper, TGRT Haber television channel, and İhlas News Agency (IHA). Ihlas Holding is a diversified conglomerate with major business interests in construction, real estate, and energy—sectors that depend heavily on government contracts and regulatory goodwill. The group's Turkish-language outlets, particularly Türkiye Gazetesi, have long maintained a staunchly pro-AKP, pro-Erdoğan editorial line and have run campaigns against opposition parties and independent media. In 2017, columnists at sister publication Türkiye openly urged the government to seize the then-independent Doğan Media Group, a call that foreshadowed that outlet's government-backed sale the following year. Press freedom organizations and independent media monitors classify Ihlas Media as a central part of Turkey's government-aligned media ecosystem, which accounts for a majority of national media reach. Türkiye Today carries this same editorial posture into English, offering a pro-Turkish government perspective on domestic politics, regional affairs, and bilateral relations with the United States and other powers.
