Background

Technician was founded on February 1, 1920, replacing The Red and White, an athletics-department publication that had been suspended during World War I. Its debut four-page issue was edited by Marion Francis Trice and covered campus news including a dormitory fire and the launch of a new architecture department. The paper grew steadily over the following decades and became a daily publication in fall 1988. By 2018, it shifted to a weekly Thursday print schedule while maintaining continuous online publication at technicianonline.com. Notable alumni include publishing executive Roy H. Park, UNC System president William C. Friday, USA Today graphics co-founder Richard Curtis, and Pulitzer-nominated photojournalist Chris Hondros. Technician operates under the NC State Student Media umbrella alongside four other student outlets and is governed by the Student Media Board of Directors; students control editorial content without prior university review. Its editorial board has taken center-left stances, including criticism of Republican-drawn legislative district maps in North Carolina and defense of LGBTQ+ coverage standards.
