Background
TrendForce was founded in 2000 in Taipei, Taiwan, by Kevin Lin, who had previously built NeoCom Technology — Taiwan's largest online marketplace — before selling it to eBay in 2002. The company began as DRAMeXchange, a pricing database for DRAM memory chips, and expanded into a broader market intelligence platform covering semiconductors, NAND flash, displays, LED lighting, smartphones, and renewable energy. By 2015, TrendForce had grown large enough to acquire Topology Research Institute, a Taiwanese tech research institute founded in 1996, absorbing its analytical capabilities and China market coverage. The firm now operates six research divisions — DRAMeXchange, WitsView, LEDinside, EnergyTrend, AVANTI, and Topology — and serves over 500,000 subscribers worldwide. In 2017 it also launched Prophet, an AI analytics subsidiary. TrendForce is widely cited by global financial and tech press for supply chain data on chips, memory pricing, and foundry capacity; its forecasts are generally treated as industry-neutral data points rather than advocacy. The firm has no known political or government funding ties, and its editorial direction is shaped by the commercial tech intelligence market rather than any ideological agenda.
