Background

TRT World launched in 2015 as TRT's English-language news channel, with the slogan 'where news inspires change'. It was modeled in part on Al Jazeera and meant to give Turkey a voice in global media. At launch, Erdoğan said it would not be 'the official bulletin of the state'. Academic research, including a 2022 study in the journal Journalism by Elswah and Howard, found that it works more like a party broadcaster. Respondents in that study said it leans toward Erdoğan's AKP, and the authors describe it as moving from a public-diplomacy tool to the AKP's voice to the world. Critics also say its domestic coverage avoids or softens stories about press freedom, the Kurdish conflict and the government's opponents. In Washington, U.S. officials rejected TRT's claim of editorial independence. They said Turkey directs and controls TRT through regulation, oversight, and its control of leadership, budget and content, and TRT's Washington operations were required to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). Its output includes news, documentaries and a large digital operation. Supporters present it as offering non-Western perspectives on world events, especially on the Muslim world, but its framing consistently reflects Turkish state positions. I did not find reliable sources on the details of its 2025–26 Trump coverage, so the administration stance above is inferred from its state-aligned editorial pattern.
