Background

U.S. News & World Report was founded in 1933 by journalist and columnist David Lawrence as a newsletter called U.S. News, focused on factual, plain-language coverage of Washington affairs. In 1946 Lawrence launched a companion publication called World Report covering international news, and the two merged in 1948 to form U.S. News & World Report, positioning it as a data-driven alternative to Time and Newsweek. Lawrence transferred ownership to employees in 1962; the outlet operated as an employee-owned company until real estate and media billionaire Mortimer Zuckerman purchased it in 1984. A pivotal editorial decision came in 1983 when the magazine introduced its annual college rankings, which became enormously influential and controversial — critics have long argued the methodology incentivizes universities to manipulate admissions and spending data to improve their scores. Facing declining print advertising, the publication stopped its regular monthly print edition in December 2010 and migrated entirely online, pivoting its business model toward rankings, consumer advice, and data licensing. Media bias analysts at AllSides rate it 'Lean Left' (with low confidence as of 2026), while Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Left-Center' with high factual reporting standards, and Ad Fontes Media places it near the center of the bias spectrum. The outlet is less a traditional political news organization than a consumer-data brand that also publishes news commentary, which makes its partisan footprint lighter than its bias ratings might suggest.
