Background

UN News traces its roots to the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), established when the UN was founded in 1945–1946 to explain the new organization's work to a global audience. The department operated primarily through radio and print for decades before expanding into digital media. On January 1, 2019, the DPI was renamed the Department of Global Communications (DGC) to signal a shift from neutral information dissemination toward strategic, audience-targeted outreach aimed at building support for UN goals. The online portal news.un.org publishes daily content in eight official UN languages — Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish — plus weekly programming in Hindi, Urdu, and Bangla.
