Background

Venezuelanalysis was founded in September 2003 by Gregory Wilpert, a sociologist and journalist, and Martin Sánchez, a co-founder of the pro-Chávez Venezuelan site Aporrea, who handled the technical infrastructure. The site's stated mission from the outset was to 'counter the corporate media propaganda against the Bolivarian Revolution by giving a voice to leftist and grassroots movements in Venezuela.' Wilpert served as the site's main editor until 2009 and remained on its board; his wife Carol Delgado was appointed Venezuela's Consul General in New York in 2008, raising questions about the site's independence from the Chávez government. In 2007, Wilpert acknowledged receiving 'some funding' from Venezuela's Ministry of Culture alongside grassroots donations, but by April 2014 the site stated it relied entirely on reader donations. In 2019, the site accepted a cash journalism prize from the Association for Investment in Popular Action Committees, which was later identified as a pro-Assad organization; Wilpert said staff had been unaware of that affiliation. Media Bias/Fact Check rates the outlet as far-left and mixed on factual accuracy, citing consistently one-sided framing favorable to the Bolivarian government and weak sourcing practices. Since the Trump administration's second term began in January 2025, and especially after the January 2026 U.S. military operation that resulted in Nicolás Maduro's capture, Venezuelanalysis has covered U.S.-Venezuela relations in strongly critical terms, portraying American policy as an effort to seize Venezuelan oil resources for U.S. and Western corporate interests.
