Background

The War Zone was founded in 2016 by Tyler Rogoway, who left Jalopnik's defense vertical Foxtrot Alpha to create the outlet as a section within The Drive, a Recurrent-owned automotive publication. It quickly built a reputation for detailed, technically rigorous coverage of military aviation, weapons systems, special operations, and intelligence matters, often leveraging FOIA requests and open-source intelligence before those methods were mainstream in defense media. North Equity acquired The Drive and The War Zone from Time Inc. in 2018, folding them into the growing Recurrent Ventures portfolio alongside titles such as Popular Science, Field & Stream, and Task & Purpose.
