Background

WBUR first went on the air on March 1, 1950, operating out of Boston University studios on Exeter Street with students handling most programming — a mix of classical music, jazz, and BU sports. Through the 1960s and into the early 1970s, the station hired professional staff and shifted toward public affairs; by 1971 it qualified for Corporation for Public Broadcasting certification. It began carrying NPR satellite programming in 1980 and by 1982 had fully established itself as a news-and-talk station built around NPR's flagship newscasts. WBUR earned two Peabody Awards, including one for the comedy program Car Talk in 1993, and in 2017 was ranked the sixth most-listened-to NPR news station in the country. The station produces nationally distributed programs including Here & Now and On Point.
