Background

WCCB traces its roots to a dormant UHF license that businessman Cy Bahakel purchased in June 1964 for $175,000; the station launched November 1, 1964, with the call letters standing for 'Charlotte Cy Bahakel.' It moved from channel 36 to channel 18 in 1966 with a powerful new tower that gave it coverage comparable to Charlotte's larger network stations. The station operated as an independent for most of its early decades before picking up a Fox affiliation around 1987, which it held for roughly 26 years. In January 2013, Fox acquired rival Charlotte station WJZY and moved its affiliation there, ending WCCB's Fox deal. WCCB became Charlotte's CW affiliate on July 1, 2013. On September 1, 2025, the station dropped the CW affiliation — when the CW network restructured its affiliate agreements — and relaunched as a fully independent station under the plain 'WCCB Charlotte' brand. By late 2025 it was producing roughly 30 hours of local news per week and expanded live local sports coverage under a 'Bahakel Sports' banner. No notable editorial controversies or documented partisan slant are on record; the station's coverage is primarily local in scope.
