Background

WHQR began as a group of opera fans called Friends of the Opera, who were worried that Metropolitan Opera broadcasts were disappearing from local airwaves. They renamed themselves Friends of Public Radio in 1980 and put WHQR on the air in 1984 from a converted bar in a Wilmington strip mall. The station moved to its Front Street studios in 1994 and later bought the third floor of the building at 254 N. Front Street. It started with classical music and has grown to include NPR news programming and local reporting. It is the sole public radio news source in much of the Cape Fear region. Its newsroom staff unionized, making it the second unionized public radio station in the Carolinas after WFAE. In 2025 Congress rescinded CPB funding, and WHQR lost about $174,000 a year (roughly 8.5% of its budget). The station's manager called it a 'survival year' and ran pledge drives to cover the gap. Its coverage follows standard public-radio journalism norms. Like most NPR affiliates, it is generally seen as center-left in audience and tone, but I did not find documented partisan editorial controversies.
