Background
WJZY signed on March 9, 1987 as an independent station in the Charlotte market, originally backed by Capitol Broadcasting Company. It became a UPN affiliate in 1995 and switched to The CW in 2006. In January 2013, Fox Television Stations acquired WJZY and sister station WMYT-TV from Capitol Broadcasting for $18 million, turning WJZY into a Fox affiliate. Fox sold both stations to Nexstar Media Group in 2019 as part of Nexstar's broader expansion into major local TV markets. In January 2022, the station dropped 'Fox 46' from its news branding and relaunched under the 'Queen City News' identity to emphasize its local Charlotte roots over its network affiliation. Nexstar is a publicly traded company that operates more than 200 stations nationally; its corporate PAC has donated to both parties, and academic research has found its ownership correlates with expanded local political coverage rather than a strong ideological tilt. WJZY now produces more than 60 hours of local news per week, the highest output of any Charlotte-market station, and independent media monitors have rated its local reporting as minimally biased.
