Background
WLRN first went on air in 1949, making it one of the older public broadcasting outlets in Florida. The station is licensed to the Miami-Dade County School Board, which has historically retained the broadcast licenses while a separate nonprofit entity handles programming and operations. A 2006 editorial integrity policy was put in place to shield news and programming decisions from both the school board and the fundraising arm. In 2022, Friends of WLRN formalized a management agreement with the school district, effective July 1 of that year on a five-year term. A dispute erupted in 2025 when the school board sued South Florida Public Media Group over the station's acquisition of a Palm Beach County radio signal; the parties settled in May 2026, with longtime WLRN journalist Tom Hudson named interim CEO and a new agreement allowing broadcasting to continue for at least another seven years. Media analysts rate WLRN as left-center in story selection and editorial perspective, consistent with the broader NPR network, while crediting it with high factual accuracy. Its coverage area and bilingual South Florida audience give it a particular focus on immigration, climate, and Florida state politics.
