Background

WNCN traces its roots to 1988, when it launched as WYED-TV under Beasley Broadcast Group as an independent station licensed to Goldsboro, North Carolina but serving the Raleigh-Durham area. It was sold to the Outlet Company of Providence in 1994, at which point it adopted the WNCN call letters. In 1995 it joined The WB network briefly before switching to NBC in the fall of that year. NBC Universal acquired it in 1996, making it an NBC owned-and-operated station. In early 2016, CBS and then-owner Media General struck an affiliation deal, and WNCN switched from NBC to CBS on February 29, 2016. Later that same year, Nexstar Broadcasting announced its acquisition of Media General for approximately $4.6 billion, bringing WNCN under the Nexstar umbrella. Nexstar renewed the CBS affiliation on a multi-year basis in 2024. The station has no notable editorial controversies on record; third-party rating services such as Media Bias/Fact Check classify it as minimally biased, consistent with its focus on local reporting for the Triangle market.
