Background

Joseph Farah, a former California newspaper editor, founded WND in May 1997 with his wife Elizabeth, first as a division of the Western Journalism Center, which he had co-founded in 1991. In 1999 it was spun off as a for-profit company, and Farah holds most of the ownership. It grew into a prominent conservative website, publishing columnists and running a book-publishing and merchandise arm. It is best known for promoting the claim that Barack Obama was not born in the U.S. (the 'birther' conspiracy), which included a 2010 billboard campaign and a book on the subject. It also settled a defamation lawsuit over its coverage of a Pentagon-related story and has been criticized for promoting end-times prophecy, anti-LGBT content, and false health and election claims. Watchdog groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and People For the American Way have been sharply critical of its content. Farah stepped back from daily operations after a stroke announced in April 2019, and Elizabeth Farah remains an active contributor. In 2025 it kept publishing strongly pro-Trump material, for example pieces praising Trump's economic and tariff moves and attacking 'globalists'. Its opinion pages reflect a religious, nationalist and populist right-wing outlook, and the site's reach is smaller than it was in the 2000s and early 2010s.
