Background

WorldNetDaily launched in May 1997, initially as a project of the Western Journalism Center, a conservative nonprofit that Farah co-founded. In 1999 it was spun off as an independent for-profit company, raising roughly $4.5 million from investors while Farah retained majority ownership. Throughout the 2000s the site built a large audience by mixing breaking-news aggregation with strongly conservative and Christian opinion content. It became the leading platform for the 'birther' movement — publishing more than 200 articles by 2009 questioning Barack Obama's citizenship and selling related merchandise — a campaign that drew widespread criticism from mainstream fact-checkers and press monitors. By the late 2010s WND faced severe financial pressure, which Farah publicly attributed to suppression by large technology platforms; in 2018–2019 the outlet restructured, moving its reporting arm into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called WND News Center while the for-profit entity continued to operate the site. Media Bias/Fact Check rates WND as 'questionable' due to extreme right-wing bias and repeated failed fact checks; the Southern Poverty Law Center has also catalogued its promotion of far-right conspiracy theories. During the second Trump administration (since January 2025) WND has run regular 'Trump & Team Highlights' features and has framed administration actions favorably, positioning itself as part of an alternative conservative media ecosystem that gained expanded White House access under the current administration.
