Background
WPTF traces its roots to 1924, when the station was first licensed in Raleigh as WFBQ with just 50 watts, owned by the Wynne Radio Company. In 1925 it became WRCO, and in 1927 it was sold to Durham Life Insurance Company, which changed the call letters to WPTF — an acronym for the company's slogan 'We Protect The Family.' Durham Life held the station for nearly 65 years, making it a Raleigh broadcasting institution. In 1991, as Durham Life exited the broadcasting business, Don Curtis purchased WPTF along with several companion stations and renamed his company the Curtis Media Group, which today is the largest privately held broadcast group in North Carolina, with WPTF as its flagship. The station operates at the federally permitted maximum of 50,000 watts on AM 680 — one of only two North Carolina AM stations at that power level — and simultaneously broadcasts on FM 92.9. Its current weekday schedule mixes locally produced news blocks in the morning and afternoon drive with three nationally syndicated Fox News Radio programs: The Brian Kilmeade Show, Fox Across America with Jimmy Failla, and Red Eye Radio, all of which carry a conservative-to-right editorial tone. This programming mix has drawn mild criticism from some observers who view the station as leaning too far right for a general news outlet.
