Background

WRAL-TV signed on December 15, 1956, as Capitol Broadcasting Company's flagship television station on Channel 5 in Raleigh, North Carolina; its parent company traces back to 1937, when attorney A.J. Fletcher founded a Raleigh radio operation. Ownership passed through four generations of the Fletcher-Goodmon family, with Jim Goodmon serving as president and CEO since 1978. In 1996, WRAL became the first television station in the United States to transmit TV signals digitally, a milestone in American broadcast history. Over time, WRAL.com grew into a significant digital news outlet serving North Carolina, expanding the station's reach beyond its broadcast signal. Media bias trackers place it in the center-left range — Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center with high factual reporting, while Ground News rates it Center — reflecting a newsroom that prioritizes sourcing and accuracy over partisan framing. In recent years, WRAL has faced the same industry pressures hitting local TV broadly: declining advertising revenue, a string of high-profile anchor and reporter departures, and intensifying competition from digital platforms. Despite those headwinds, it remains notable as one of the last locally owned network affiliates in a major U.S. market, a distinction its ownership has actively highlighted.
