Background

WTVD signed on September 2, 1954 as Channel 11 in Durham, North Carolina, making it one of the earliest and longest-running commercial television stations in the state. It originally affiliated with NBC as its primary network, with ABC as a secondary affiliation. In 1957, Capital Cities Television Corporation acquired the station, and by 1985 WTVD had switched its primary affiliation to ABC in a swap with local rival WRAL-TV. When Capital Cities acquired ABC in 1986 for $3.2 billion, WTVD became the first network-owned-and-operated TV station in North Carolina. Disney's 1996 purchase of Capital Cities/ABC transferred ownership to The Walt Disney Company, where it has remained. The station operates under the ABC Eyewitness News brand and covers local, regional, and national stories largely in line with mainstream broadcast journalism standards.
