Background

WUNC first broadcast as a University of North Carolina AM station in the 1940s, switched to FM on November 3, 1952 — with UNC students Carl Kasell and Charles Kuralt at the microphone for its inaugural FM broadcast — then went dark in 1970 and relaunched as an NPR affiliate on April 3, 1976. By the early 1990s the station phased out direct North Carolina legislative funding and became largely self-supporting through listener donations and corporate underwriting. In 2001 it shifted to an all-news-and-information format, and in 2015 UNC-Chapel Hill restructured its governance under WUNC Public Radio LLC. NPR itself was incorporated in 1970 following the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, first went on air in April 1971, and nearly collapsed under debt in 1983 before a CPB bailout stabilized it. Independent bias trackers, including AllSides (rating: Lean Left, score −1.88 as of 2025–26) and Media Bias/Fact Check (Left-Center), characterize NPR's coverage as reflecting a moderate liberal tilt in story selection and framing. The Trump administration signed an executive order in May 2025 directing federal agencies to end public media funding, labeling NPR and PBS 'biased'; NPR and several affiliates filed First Amendment lawsuits, and a CPB distribution contract was partially revived following legal pressure in late 2025.
