Background

Zacks Investment Research was founded in 1978 by Leonard (Len) Zacks, an MIT-trained mathematician, and is based in Chicago. It built its business on the idea that changes in analysts' earnings estimates move stock prices. That idea became the Zacks Rank, a quantitative stock-rating model the firm says has beaten the S&P 500 since 1988. Zacks began serving individual investors in 1992 and launched Zacks.com in 1996. Len Zacks's son, Mitch Zacks, later joined the business, and it is principally owned by Mitch Zacks and a family trust. The company has also run an investment-management subsidiary, Zacks Investment Management. Its content is syndicated widely, including on Yahoo Finance. Its articles are often promotional, because they steer readers toward its Zacks Rank-based paid services, and its performance claims come from the firm itself. Its perspective is pro-investor and market-focused. When it covers administration policies such as tariffs, taxes or Fed actions, it does so in terms of stock and sector impact and avoids partisan framing.
