Background

AEI was founded in 1943 as the American Enterprise Association by industrialist Lewis H. Brown and was renamed the American Enterprise Institute in 1962. It grew substantially in the 1970s under president William Baroody Sr., expanding to hundreds of resident and adjunct scholars and establishing itself as one of Washington's most influential think tanks, largely through funding from the Howard Pew Freedom Trust. By the 2000s, AEI had become closely associated with neoconservatism, supporting the Iraq War and a robust U.S. global military posture; it drew major funding from Donors Trust ($86.7 million from 2003–2010), the Charles Koch Foundation, the Sarah Scaife Foundation, and ExxonMobil, among others. Its current president, Robert Doar, took over in 2019 and has steered AEI toward a somewhat broader center-right identity while maintaining its core free-market and strong-defense orientation. The Korean Peninsula Update is a joint project with ISW, created to provide weekly open-source analysis of North Korean military developments and to support what the two organizations call a 'coalition defense of Taiwan' framework aimed at deterring China and North Korea in the Indo-Pacific. Coverage consistently advocates for strong U.S.–South Korea alliance commitments, robust nuclear extended deterrence, and a hardline posture toward North Korea's weapons programs and its military cooperation with Russia. AEI scholars have taken a notably mixed stance toward the Trump second term: while some have backed Trump's conservative domestic priorities, others have published sharp critiques—including pieces characterizing his second term as a 'murky, embarrassing and costly spectacle'—and the Korean Peninsula Update itself has flagged concerns that the administration's reduced emphasis on extended deterrence could undermine the conditions for transferring operational control to South Korea.
