Background

PBS North Carolina launched on January 8, 1955, as WUNC-TV in Chapel Hill — one of the earliest educational television stations in the country and predating the Corporation for Public Broadcasting by twelve years. Its founding was aided by Joseph Bryan of Jefferson Standard Broadcasting, who donated his company's FCC application paperwork to the university, reducing startup costs. The station became a PBS affiliate in 1970 and gradually expanded into a statewide network with transmitters reaching all 100 of North Carolina's counties. It was branded on-air as North Carolina Public Television through the 1970s–80s, then rebranded as UNC-TV in the 1990s. On January 12, 2021, it rebranded again as PBS North Carolina — 'Powered by the UNC System' — to align with the national PBS brand and its growing digital presence. In 2025, the Trump administration targeted public broadcasting funding; Congress rescinded approximately $1.1 billion in CPB appropriations, costing PBS North Carolina roughly $4.8 million annually. The station laid off 32 employees in fall 2025 and launched a voluntary separation program; it also faced a potential additional $4 million loss in state funding from a North Carolina Senate bill. Despite the funding crisis, the station publicly pledged to continue its mission, and a federal judge ruled in March 2026 that Trump's original executive order defunding PBS and NPR had been unlawful, though the ruling was largely moot after congressional rescission.
