Background

Peter G. Peterson founded the organization in 2008 after committing $1 billion—much of it derived from Blackstone's 2007 IPO—to address what he described as America's unsustainable fiscal trajectory. Peterson, a Republican who served as Secretary of Commerce under President Nixon and co-founded the Blackstone Group with Stephen Schwarzman, had spent decades warning about federal debt and entitlement costs before creating the Foundation. The first president and CEO was David M. Walker, former Comptroller General of the United States. The Foundation quickly became a major institutional voice for deficit reduction, funding think tanks, academic research, and public-awareness campaigns across party lines. Critics including economist Paul Krugman and the media watchdog FAIR argued that the Foundation functions as 'deficit-scold central,' channeling hundreds of millions of dollars toward organizations that promote austerity and cuts to social insurance programs. Peter G. Peterson died in March 2018; his son Michael A. Peterson has led the Foundation since.
