Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
U.S. government-funded, pro-democracy / anti-authoritarian
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty is a U.S. government-funded nonprofit broadcaster that, by law, operates with editorial independence from the U.S. government; its mission is to provide independent news to audiences in countries with restricted press freedom, chiefly in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. Though it receives nearly all of its budget from Congress via USAGM, the Trump administration moved to terminate its FY2025 grant in March 2025; RFE/RL sued and won a court order restoring funds, and the EU and several European nations stepped in with emergency support. Its coverage is oriented toward Western democratic values and has been broadly critical of the Trump administration's actions toward it and toward press freedom generally.
