Background

Reason magazine was founded in 1968 by Lanny Friedlander. Robert Poole bought it in 1970, and the Reason Foundation was created in 1978 to support it and to do policy research. Over time the foundation became a prominent libertarian think tank. Its policy work covers privatization, transportation and infrastructure, pension reform, education choice and criminal justice. David Koch served on its board for decades, and Koch-linked foundations have been among its donors, so critics have tied it to conservative donor networks. Watchdog groups such as SourceWatch and DeSmog have criticized the foundation for past work on environmental and energy issues. Reason's own writers have defended its editorial independence. Its writers favor free markets, free trade, drug legalization, civil liberties and open immigration, which separates them from both major parties. In 2026 Reason has published many pieces criticizing Trump's tariffs as harmful, illegal and politically unpopular, and it has been critical of expanded executive authority. Its news and commentary are generally rated as right-leaning on economics but not aligned with the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. Mixed coverage follows from that: it criticizes many administration policies and also criticizes Democratic ones.
