Spectrum News
U.S. regional/local news, center (corporate cable-owned)
Background
Spectrum News is the brand for regional news channels that began as Time Warner Cable's local news operations. NY1 launched in 1992, and other regional channels followed in states such as North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, Upstate New York and Southern California. Charter took ownership when it bought Time Warner Cable in May 2016 and later renamed the channels Spectrum News after its cable brand. Each channel mostly covers local government, weather, traffic and sports, with some national and international stories added. The business is built to serve Charter's cable customers, which tends to favor non-controversial, locally focused reporting. Its footprint is growing: Charter announced in February 2026 that it would acquire NECN from NBCUniversal, and the Cox merger is expected to bring Spectrum News into more markets. In August 2026 Charter and Optimum (Altice) restored a deal that returns NY1 to Optimum customers and News 12 to Spectrum customers. The channels have drawn little notable partisan controversy, though like other cable-owned newsrooms they have faced staffing cuts and consolidation. This profile is based on limited search results and does not include an analysis of recent coverage of the administration, so that rating reflects the outlet's general style rather than a detailed content review.
