Background

Ukrainska Pravda was founded in April 2000 by journalist Heorhii Gongadze and co-founder Olena Prytula as an online-only publication designed to bypass state-controlled and oligarch-influenced Ukrainian media. Just months after launch, Gongadze was kidnapped and murdered, a crime later tied to associates of then-President Leonid Kuchma and which became a landmark press-freedom case in post-Soviet Ukraine. Prytula led the outlet for 14 years before handing the editor-in-chief role to Sevhil Musaieva in 2014; Musaieva has continued in that role through the present. The outlet gained its largest audience during Russia's full-scale invasion beginning in February 2022, briefly becoming the most-visited website in Ukraine after Google. In May 2021, Prytula sold full ownership to Dragon Capital's Tomáš Fiala, who committed to editorial non-interference; in early 2025, Fiala sold a 13% stake to the Dutch impact fund Pluralis, which briefly generated controversy after reporting (later retracted and attributed to mistaken sourcing) suggested a link to Russian-connected investors. European Pravda was launched in June 2014 by journalists Sydorenko and Panchenko after their previous employer, Kommersant Ukraine, shut down; though originally planned as a Ukrainska Pravda subsidiary, it became an independent NGO and focuses specifically on Ukraine's relationship with the EU, NATO, and European institutions. Both outlets editorially champion Ukraine's sovereignty and Euro-Atlantic path; they have been critical of peace frameworks perceived as locking in Russian territorial gains or undermining Ukraine's security guarantees, including aspects of the Trump administration's 2025 proposal, and have covered U.S. policy toward Ukraine with scrutiny rather than deference.
